Mayors: Exaggerated Migrant Gang Coverage Creates 'Hysteria'

Denver, Aurora Mayors Decry Sensationalized News Reports on Migrant Gangs

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock and Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman have condemned what they call “exaggerated” and “sensationalized” news coverage of migrant gangs in their cities.

In a joint statement, the mayors said the coverage has created “an atmosphere of fear and hysteria” that is not based on facts.

“The vast majority of migrants are not gang members, and in fact, many are fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries,” the mayors said.

The mayors’ statement comes after a series of news reports about the alleged presence of migrant gangs in Denver and Aurora.

One report, published by the Denver Post, claimed that there are “dozens” of migrant gang members in the city.

Another report, published by the Aurora Sentinel, claimed that a migrant gang is responsible for a recent string of violent crimes in the city.

The mayors said they are working with law enforcement to address any potential gang activity, but they強調 that the vast majority of migrants are not gang members.

“We urge the media to be responsible in their reporting on this issue,” the mayors said.

“Sensationalized headlines and exaggerated claims only serve to create fear and division.”

Experts: Migrant Gang Coverage Often Based on Stereotypes

Experts on migration say that news coverage of migrant gangs is often based on stereotypes and fear-mongering.

“There is no evidence to support the claim that migrants are more likely to be involved in gangs than other groups of people,” said Alex Nowrasteh, an immigration policy analyst at the Cato Institute.

Nowrasteh said that the vast majority of migrants are law-abiding citizens who are simply trying to improve their lives.

“The media needs to be more responsible in their reporting on this issue,” said Nowrasteh.

“Sensationalized headlines and exaggerated claims only serve to create fear and division.”

How to Report on Migrant Gangs Responsibly

Here are some tips for reporting on migrant gangs responsibly:

  • Avoid using sensationalized headlines and exaggerated claims.
  • Focus on facts and evidence, not stereotypes.
  • Give context to your reporting by explaining the complex factors that contribute to gang activity.
  • Avoid making generalizations about all migrants based on the actions of a few.
  • Be mindful of the impact your reporting may have on the communities you cover.
