UNC Basketball Recruiting: Key Target Cancels Visit

Five-Star Forward GG Jackson Backs Out of Chapel Hill Trip

UNC's pursuit of five-star forward GG Jackson has hit a snag, as the prized recruit has canceled his scheduled visit to Chapel Hill this weekend. While no definitive reason for the cancellation has been provided, speculation has centered around Jackson's desire to explore other options before making a decision.

Jackson, a 6'9" power forward from Columbia, South Carolina, is considered one of the top prospects in the 2023 recruiting class. He has been a long-time target for the Tar Heels, who were hoping to build their frontcourt around the talented prospect.

Jackson's Recruitment Remains Wide Open

Despite the canceled visit, Jackson's recruitment is still very much up in the air. He has taken official visits to Duke and Georgetown and is planning trips to Auburn and Alabama in the coming weeks. The South Carolina native has also been heavily linked to his hometown school, the South Carolina Gamecocks.

With the NCAA early signing period approaching in November, Jackson is expected to make a decision on his college destination soon. UNC remains in the running, but they will need to convince Jackson that Chapel Hill is the best place for him to develop both on and off the court.

Impact on UNC's Recruiting Class

The cancellation of Jackson's visit is a setback for UNC's recruiting efforts. However, the Tar Heels have already secured commitments from four-star forward Zayden High (Charlotte, North Carolina) and four-star center Tyler Nickel (Madison, Wisconsin).

UNC is also still in the running for several other top prospects, including five-star guard Simeon Wilcher (Phenix City, Alabama) and four-star forward Jalen Washington (Las Vegas, Nevada). With the early signing period fast approaching, UNC coach Hubert Davis will be hoping to add some more pieces to his 2023 recruiting class.
